Description
Founded around 1100, Carisbrooke Castle was a key defensive site for over nine centuries, serving as a prison for King Charles I and home to Queen Victoria’s youngest daughter. Visitors begin with an introductory film outlining the castle’s rich history.
Explore the battlements and climb the steep steps to the massive castle mound, where the Norman keep offers expansive views. Wander through the medieval gatehouse, inspect the ruins of Carey's Mansion, and discover original domestic buildings modified by later residents.
See the room where King Charles I attempted to escape but became trapped in the window bars. The Edwardian-style Princess Beatrice Garden features a fountain and plantings in the royal arms’ colors. Meet the Carisbrooke donkeys as they tread the water wheel, a centuries-old mechanism used to draw water from the castle well.
Also on display is the statue of the war horse Warrior, loaned to English Heritage to mark the centenary of the First World War.
