Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons is one of the most recorded works in classical music and showcases the solo violin. Each concerto represents a different season, influenced by poems likely written by Vivaldi and inspired by the seasonal landscapes painted by Marco Ricci. The music vividly depicts birdsong, buzzing flies, harvest celebrations, drunken revellers, barking dogs, summer storms and winter ice.
Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending, composed just before the First World War, offers a reflective contrast. Inspired by George Meredith’s poem, the piece evokes a pastoral world on the edge of change, with a soaring violin line that suggests a lark gliding above the mechanised world below.
Mozart features twice with the lively Overture to The Marriage of Figaro followed by his Flute Quartet in D, written for a wealthy amateur flautist. The quartet highlights the flute with a bright opening, a lyrical slow movement, and a playful finale.
