guided coasteering along a wild coastline
Local tip
An old pair of secure, closed-toe trainers and shorts for wearing over the wetsuit are practical additions for the session.

Freshwater Bay Coasteering Ltd provides guided coastal adventures from Gate Lane at Freshwater Bay on the Isle of Wight. The activity uses the shoreline as a natural course, with participants moving through the area where land and sea meet rather than following a conventional walking route.

Sessions combine sea-level traversing, rock scrambling, climbing, swimming, body surfing, caving and optional jumps into the water. Each route is guided and adapted to the conditions, with different ways around features available when a section does not suit a participant. The result is an active introduction to the rocky coast, with time spent in the water as well as on the shore.

High-tide coasteering is the more energetic format. It is designed for participants aged 12 and over who can swim at least 100 metres confidently in the sea and have a fair level of fitness. The two-hour session introduces techniques for handling the coastline, including swimming, climbing, cave exploration and jumping where appropriate.

Low-tide coasteering offers a gentler alternative for a broader age range, starting from eight years old. Alongside scrambling, cave exploration and some sea swimming, the guides cover the area's geology, history, wildlife and possible foraging opportunities. The emphasis is on exploring the coast at a more manageable pace.

Wetsuits, buoyancy aids and helmets are supplied. Participants need closed-toe footwear that will stay secure, with old lace-up trainers recommended, and shorts worn over a wetsuit can help protect the equipment from snags. Public and private group sessions are available, making the activity suitable for family outings that meet the relevant swimming and age requirements, as well as organised groups.

Safety is central to the format. The guides are qualified beach lifeguards, monitor the tide and sea conditions before and during each session, and check the safety equipment daily. Freshwater Bay Coasteering Ltd holds an Adventure Activities Licensing Authority licence.
