Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons is one of the most recorded classical works, highlighting the solo violin. Each concerto represents a different season, influenced by poems possibly written by Vivaldi and inspired by the seasonal landscapes of artist Marco Ricci. The music vividly portrays scenes of nature such as birdsong, buzzing flies, harvest celebrations, drunken revelers, barking dogs, summer storms, and winter ice.
Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending, composed before the First World War, provides a reflective contrast. Inspired by George Meredith’s poem, the piece evokes a pastoral world on the edge of change. Its soaring violin simulates a lark gliding above a mechanised world, described as “lost on his aerial rings / In light, and then the fancy sings.”
Mozart’s contributions include the energetic Overture to The Marriage of Figaro and the Flute Quartet in D, written for an affluent amateur flautist. The quartet features the flute prominently, opening with bright, tuneful melodies, followed by a slow, expressive movement and concluding with a playful, fast finale.
