The Isle of Wight

On the south coast of England is the beautiful Isle of Wight, enjoying some of the best weather in the UK. The island’s stunning landscape, friendly locals and relaxed way of life, make it an ideal place for a fulfilling holiday. Only 26 by 13 miles wide, the Isle of wight has a unique and charming quality, which appeals to many. However, don't be fooled by its modest character - the Isle of Wight has big personality and a huge amount to offer!

With excellent sailing, water-sports, walks and cycle paths, along with more ‘extreme’ sports (including paragliding, power-boating, 4x4 driving and even tree climbing!) there is plenty on offer to suit the more adventurous. For those who are seeking peace and tranquillity, why not snooze on a beach during the summer, or spend lazy afternoons by a warm fire at one of our historic pubs during the winter? There are some top-notch restaurants too of course. If you are bringing the kids, you will find plenty of fun-filled family attractions and activities, to entertain you all and make your time together very memorable.

Sometimes known as the 'Garden Isle', the island is steeped in history, being a favourite particularly of Queen Victoria, who in 1845 built her holiday home Osborne House in East Cowes. She  wrote, "It is impossible to imagine a prettier spot." Many of the older buildings within the island's towns are Victorian, recognised by their high ceilings, sash windows and cast iron fire places. However, Isle of Wight history dates back to BC, with Roman sites discovered and preserved in the form of museums. For those of you interested in the history of Britain, there are many fascinating sights to see. Be sure to visit Old St. Boniface Church, dating back to 1070 AD; Carisbrooke Castle; and the picturesque ‘Winkle Street’.

Some major annual events on the island include the ‘Isle of Wight Festival’ and ‘Bestival’ music festivals, along with world-wide sailing events ‘Cowes Week’ and the ‘Round the Island Boat Race’. Throughout the year, the Isle of wight locals also host various carnivals, fayres and fireworks displays, (particularly in the larger towns of Ventnor, Sandown, Ryde, Cowes and Yarmouth,) which are well worth a look.
