Local tips on getting around and exploring

If you’re staying on the Isle of Wight for a few days, don’t stress about having a car the whole time. The island's bus system is better than you’d expect, especially during the peak months. That said, some spots like Yarmouth or Niton are trickier to reach, so plan accordingly.

For the best mix of convenience and freedom, I’d pick a base like Cowes or Ventnor. Both have good bus links and enough on their doorstep to keep you busy,Ventnor’s microclimate means the gardens there are worth a linger, and Cowes has that lively harbour buzz. Renting a bike for a day or two is also brilliant, you’ll catch things locals rarely mention, like a tiny hidden beach or a secret café. Don’t be afraid to ask around or stop at a local shop for real advice; islanders tend to know the best spots that aren’t in any guidebook.

Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions about what to do on the Isle of Wight? I’m here to help.

Honestly, you can get around surprisingly well by bus, especially in the summer when services run more often. Also, try renting a bike, best way to soak in the scenery, especially around places like Ventnor and the Undercliff. I usually skip driving whenever I can.
Absolutely. The coastal path near Freshwater Bay is stunning, and pretty easy even if you’re not super fit. And for something a bit more wild, the walk along St Catherine’s Down gives great views but watch out for wind,it’s proper open up top.
You’ve got to try the trip out to The Needles. It’s a classic. There’s a boat from Alum Bay that takes you pretty close. I’d also recommend a sunset cruise from Cowes if you want something a bit chill, with excellent views of the sailing boats coming in.
The Spyglass Inn in Ventnor serves great local ales and has a cozy vibe with real character. It’s right on the beach, so you can come off a walk and grab a pint. And if you’re near Freshwater, The Crown is a proper island classic.
Don’t skip Blackgang Chine. It’s a bit odd, part theme park, part weird relic, but oddly charming. Also, if you’re into history, Carisbrooke Castle is a gem that’s way more than just a ruin. You can even feed the donkeys that live there!
