Yarmouth

To the west of Cowes is the village of Yarmouth. Much smaller than Cowes, but still attracting sailors into its port from the solent, Yarmouth is a classy place with lots of character. The original settlement here dates back to 991 AD, being one of the earliest recorded settlements on the Isle of Wight. Some of the street layout was originally put in place by Normans.

Now, Yarmouth is a charming village, with some good quality cafes, pubs and restaurants. There are some great hotels and holiday rentals for anyone looking to stay there. There are also some interesting gift shops and a new delicatessen. Throughout the year, Yarmouth holds various events, the most well known of which being the Old Gaffers Festival. This attracts a bigger crowd each year, creating a real buzz as people mill about looking not only at the traditional sail boats and antique cars, but the many stalls, entertainers and tasty treats.
