Carisbrooke Castle

Historical Sites

Carisbrooke Castle is best known as the place where King Charles I was imprisoned. However, there are many more years of history to be discovered behind the walls of this iconic castle on the Isle of Wight.

Although there was apparently a fortress on the site since Saxon times, the castle itself started to be built around 1100 AD. In its time Carisbrooke Castle has resisted an attack by the French and survived through the Spanish Armada!

Carisbrooke Castle is perfect for a wonderful day out with the family. There is something for everyone... the children can dress up as Norman soldiers or Civil War troopers, meet the Carisbrooke Castle donkeys and explore till their hearts are content. For the grown ups, the castle is of course rich in history, which the castle museum will tell you all about, including tales of famous ghosts that still haunt the grounds!

English Heritage holds various fantastic events at Carisbrooke Castle throughout the year. We loved The Knight's Tournament last year.
